What is it the 4C’s?
Diamond valuation in the modern world is based on a set of criteria known as the 4Cs: carat, cut, color, and clarity. These four components are used by the international diamond industry as a uniform standard for determining the quality and value of a diamond.
CARAT
The carat refers to the weight of the diamond and is one of the most significant factors in determining its price. One carat is equal to 0.2 grams, and the higher the weight, the more significant the value of the diamond, because large diamonds are rarer in nature. However, weight alone is not enough to evaluate a diamond, as other factors also affect the overall quality.
CUT
The cut of the diamond is another key component that determines the way the diamond reflects light. A diamond that is cut precisely and perfectly will reflect the rays of light optimally, creating a bright and radiant appearance. The cut is measured at various levels, from Excellent to Poor, where inaccurate work can significantly reduce the value of the diamond even if its weight is high.
COLOR
The third component is the color of the diamond, which is determined according to a scale ranging from the letter D, which symbolizes a completely colorless diamond (white at the highest grade) and is considered extremely rare, to the letter Z, which indicates prominent yellow or brown tones. The more colorless the diamond, the more unique and expensive it is because the lack of color allows the diamond to reflect light more purely and brightly.
CLARITY
Finally, the diamond’s clarity measures the amount of internal and external flaws in the stone. Internal flaws are called “Inclusions” while external flaws are called “Blemishes”. Clarity levels range from FL (flawless) to I (flaws that are clearly visible to the naked eye). The fewer or smaller the flaws, the higher the quality and more expensive the diamond is considered to be.
The weight, cut, color, and clarity of a diamond combine to create a comprehensive and accurate assessment of its uniqueness and value. The combination of these four criteria makes a diamond spectacular not only in the eyes of its owner but also in the global trading market where accurate valuation is essential.
